Katherine Burns works in Corporate Affairs and Engagement at L’Oréal USA, the largest subsidiary of the global beauty leader with a portfolio of more than 35 iconic brands, focused on media relations, events/stages, executive visibility and awards strategy. In this role, she creates and implements external communications strategies that increase the visibility of the company’s key business initiatives, leadership, values, expertise, and societal contributions among external stakeholders.
Prior to joining L’Oréal USA, Katherine led external communications for Deloitte US’s Office of the CEO overseeing key strategy for the firm and its top leaders. She also previously worked in Edelman’s Corporate and Public Affairs practice and in Weber Shandwick’s Corporate and Financial Services practices where she led and supported work for a variety of top US and global companies spanning industries including financial services, consumer products, technology, education, and healthcare, among others.
What have been the biggest success factors in your career?
Maintaining a strong commitment to quality work, seeking out opportunities to gain new skills, and building a strong network. I’m truly very passionate about the communications and public relations industry, and I want to play a role in its evolution as the world around us changes.
What advice do you have for someone new to the industry?
So much opportunity lies ahead! Be flexible and open to trying new things. My first job out of college was in financial services and public relations. That ultimately led to roles in corporate communications and executive visibility across a variety of industries, which brought me to my current role. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t kept an open mind and sought out new opportunities.
What advice do you have for building connections within this industry?
It’s all about building genuine relationships. Bring your authentic self. Find commonalities and differences. Invest the time and energy.
