Pew Research Center examined how journalists and the public feel about the news industry.

A survey of 11,889 U.S.-based journalists was conducted from Feb. 16 – March 17, 2022. Two surveys of 9,388 and 10,441 U.S. adults were conducted Feb. 7-13 and March 7-13, 2022, respectively.

Key findings include:

  • 70% of journalists are “very” or “somewhat” satisfied with their job.
  • 57% of journalists are “extremely” or “very concerned” about future restrictions on press freedoms.
  • Journalists and the public disagree about how well they believe news outlets do their jobs.
  • 65% of journalists believe news outlets report the news accurately, as opposed to 35% of the public.
  • 75% of journalists surveyed said those with similar political views getting news from the same sources is a major problem, compared to only 39% of the public who say the same.
