NEW YORKThe Institute for Public Relations (IPR) is thrilled to announce the winners of the three 2024 IPR Student Awards: The Don Bartholomew Award for Excellence in Public Relations Research (sponsored by Ketchum), the Cision Insights Fellowship, and the Orangefiery Master’s Thesis of the Year Award. These prestigious awards recognize and celebrate students’ outstanding contributions to public relations research and celebrate the importance of research to the industry.

The three awards will be presented at the 62nd Annual IPR Distinguished Lecture and Awards Gala on Dec. 4, 2024, at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers in New York City. 

Here are the 2024 Honorees: 

–The Don Bartholomew Award for Excellence in Public Relations Research: Anne Perera, University of Georgia
–2023 Fall Cision Insights Fellowship: Morgan Badurak, Louisiana State University
–2024 Spring Cision Insights Fellowship: Sihao “Max” Zhou, University of Georgia
–Orangefiery Master’s Thesis of the Year Award: Lily Teagan Williams, University of Missouri

The Don Bartholomew Award for Excellence in Public Relations Research, sponsored by Ketchum, is intended to provide a public relations/communications or business school graduate student with the opportunity to gain practical experience in public relations research at Ketchum and learn what “research that matters to the practice” means. The fellow receives a paid fellowship working with Ketchum and has the opportunity to publish their research paper.

Anne Perera, a doctoral student at the University of Georgia, is the recipient of the prestigious 2024 Don Bartholomew Award for Excellence in Public Relations Research.

The Cision Insights Fellowship Award provides invaluable hands-on experience and mentorship to outstanding undergraduate or graduate students in the field of public relations, business, or communications. Two award recipients—one in spring and one in fall—receive a $1,200 stipend, free access to the Cision Insights software and mentorship from an experienced Cision Insights analyst.

The Fall 2023 Cision Insights Fellowship was awarded to Louisiana State University doctoral student Morgan Badurak for her case study: “Is Corporate Advocacy the Pathway to Gen Z Engagement?”

The Spring 2024 Cision Insights Fellowship was awarded to University of Georgia doctoral student Sihao “Max” Zhou for his work on how personalization algorithms shape brand reputation with regards to sustainability.

The Orangefiery Best Master’s Thesis of the Year Award recognizes and encourages graduate study and scholarship in public relations. Submissions for the award are judged by IPR Trustees. The award winner receives a $2,000 grant.

Lily Teagan Williams, a master’s graduate at University of Missouri, will receive the 2024 Orangefiery Master’s Thesis of the Year Award. In her study, “From Reaction to Recovery: An Examination of Cybersecurity Incident Response.” Lily introduced an adaptive crisis communications model that addresses the unique dynamics of influencer-driven media cycles and communication strategies in cybersecurity incidents. Her advisor, Dr. Jonathan Stemmle, will also receive a $1,000 award.
