IPR is featuring research and some of the many Hispanic pioneers who have had an impact on the field of public relations in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Frank del Olmo was born in Los Angeles on May 18, 1948. He studied journalism at UCLA and California State University, Northridge, while interning at the Los Angeles Times under the mentorship of Ruben Salazar.
Del Olmo’s work focused on the impact of immigration in California and the challenges immigrants faced while crossing the border and settling in the United States. In 1975, he won an Emmy Award for “The Unwanted,” a documentary about the United States-Mexico border. In 1984, he and his team won a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1984 for their 27-story anthology on the Latino community and culture in Southern California.
Del Olmo cofounded the California Chicano News Media Association in 1972. In 1982, he chaired a meeting of Latino journalists, which would later become the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ). In 2002, he was inducted into the NAHJ Hall of Fame. Del Olmo continued to work at the Los Angeles Times until he died in 2004.
