Prof. dr. Cees van Riel, the Institute for Public Relations’ 2011 Pathfinder Award recipient was the subject of Frank Ovaitt’s recent feature in the Holmes Report. Van Riel presented his report, “The Alignment Factor: Academic Foundations & Practical Applications,” to the IPR Board of Trustees in which he offered research-based learnings on corporate reputation, communications and strategic alignment.

“Employee alignment with corporate strategy evokes success for the enterprise,” states the article. “Van Riel cites a Corporate Executive Council study documenting that a 10 percent improvement in alignment on defined measures produces a six percent improvement in employee effort – and a two percent improvement in overall corporate performance.”

Van Riel emphasizes that managers must answer the “what’s in it for me” question so employees know and understand strategy to implement it in their work.

Van Riel is professor of corporate communication at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM), and vice chairman and co-founder of Reputation Institute. Van Riel’s presentation is available on the IPR web site, https://instituteforpr.org/topics/the-alignment-factor-academic-foundations-practical-applications/
