    I think the discussion on the stakeholder relationship governance models is quite important and I do agree with you that social network analysis certainly introduces new ways of conceiving such governance. Having long ago discarded unilateral governance (“the public be damned”)I believe bilateral governance (symmetrical or win win vs. asymmetrical or win-lose) has been heavily subject to scrutiny in Public Relations and the majority of those professionals and organizations who believe in long term relationships understand that sometimes you have to be flexible and achieve compromises (win-win) while in other situations you/your organization will need to dialogue and negotiate to maximize your own benefits (but even in such situations, can’t you still apply 2-way symmetrical communication?). So deciding on the governance to apply to a specific situation (I call them Communicative Equations) within a long term relationship basically depends on the situation itself and the variables at stake.

    However, what I believe is changing structurally is the need to involve in the analysis of such equations more than just the organization and a set of specific stakeholders/publics immediately involved, due precisely to what you refer to as interconnectedness. For example, any issue involving the organization and its employees might potentially involve suppliers, community, regulators directly (1st level of involvement), but have indirect impacts in others who need to be represented as a “third party” or “society as a whole” and who can be pretty much delimited and identified by using social network analysis. That’s why I propose to think about “trilateral governance” (understood as a synonym of multilateral), which is certainly applicable to large, complex or multinational organizations, but generally useful for all organizations operating in the “network society”.

    Finally, I think 2-way symmetrical communication needs to be understood as the standard for anyone interested in long term relationships, and that it needs to be applied independently of the governance approach (bilateral or trilateral).

    Thanks for weighing in on this. I believe much of the solution to the problem of managing mutually beneficial relationships is related with a long term vision of relationships. 

    If you (i.e. the PR professional’s organization or client) believe in long term relationships with stakeholders, then it’s quite natural to sometimes manage the tradeoff between immediate / long term benefits.Let me put it this way: as in any other business function,  PR need to manage investments which translate in an advancement of the quality of relationships. For this purpose, sometimes we will have to maximize gains and produce quick wins for the organization whereas in other occasions we will reduce those to the benefit of the stakeholder. This will ensure long term mutually beneficial relationships  which is what I call win win.  

    Where I see  the relevant changes related with the network organization is in the governance of these relationships. No longer do we need to find  win win with one specific stakeholder involved but with an enlarged notion of stakeholder environment. That’s why we need  to apply a trilateral or multilateral approach to finding and managing the relevant negotiation variables, supported by network analysis techniques and concepts.

  3. João — a very interesting and potentially urgent basis for enlivening the discussion about 2-way symmetrical activities. The recent practitioner discussions seem to elevate toward 2-way asymmetry (the basis for PR being advancement of organizational objectives rather than mutual objectives), and seeing the network connections might alter that calculus. I’m still not sure whether truly symmetrical communication is possible in business enterprise, as the compromise allowing mutual benefit implies a reduction in benefit to the client organization (used broadly here to include the organization the PR pro works for).
