Pew Research Center examined the rise of podcasts as news and information sources in the past year. Podcasts cover a wide range of topics and attract different types of listeners. Pew Research Center highlights the reasons why Americans listen to podcasts and what these podcasts discuss.

A survey of 5,132 U.S. adults was conducted from Dec. 5-11, 2022. 

Key findings include:

1.) 49% of U.S. adults listened to a podcast within the past 12 months.
–67% of adults who listened to a podcast within the past 12 months said the podcast discussed news.
2.) 55% of podcast listeners in the U.S. said the main reason they listen is to learn.
— 30% of podcast listeners said a major reason they listen is to hear other people’s opinions.
— 29% of listeners said a major reason they listen is to stay up to date about current events.
3.) 87% of podcast listeners who hear news being discussed in podcasts said they expect that news to be mostly accurate.
— 31% of these listeners said they trust that news more than the news they get from other sources.
