Mental Health America studied the state of employees’ mental health and well-being in the U.S. and analyzed best practices for mentally healthy work environments. 

A survey of 25,948 workers across 17 U.S. industries was conducted in 2023.

Key findings include:

1.) 76% of respondents said they felt emotionally and mentally safe in their workplace. 
— 62% of respondents who worked in unhealthy workplaces said workplace stress affects their mental health, compared to 19% of respondents who worked in healthy workplaces.
— 34% of respondents who worked in unhealthy workplaces said they experience microaggressions at work, compared to 7% of respondents who worked in healthy workplaces.
2.) 76% of respondents said they’d recommend their workplace to peers.
3.) 73% of respondents said their workplace takes direct actions to address discrimination.
4.) Of workers who felt that leadership valued their identity, 81% reported that leadership “has meaningful conversations about race, gender, or disability in the workplace.” 
— 75% agreed that their organization invests time and energy into building a diverse workforce.
