Morning Consult tracked Americans’ self-reported usage of the major networks on cable news (CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News) and broadcast (ABC, CBS, and NBC) in relation to their political views.

Surveys of registered U.S. voters were conducted from 2018-2022 and from Jan. 1-31, 2023.

Key findings include:

1.) 57% of voters who frequented CNN or MSNBC identified themselves as Democrats.
2.) In 2023, the three broadcast networks sampled had roughly the same political composition of viewers.
— ABC had 43% Democratic viewers, 27% Independent viewers, and 30% Republican viewers.
— CBS had 44% Democratic viewers, 26% Independent viewers, and 30% Republican viewers.
— NBC had 44% Democratic viewers, 27% Independent viewers, and 30% Republican viewers.
3.) Roughly a third of CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News viewers said they identified with moderate ideologies.
— 34% of CNN’s viewers were moderate.
— 33% of MSNBC’s viewers were moderate.
— 28% of Fox News’ viewers were moderate.
